The city of Dnipropetrovsk or Dnepropetrovsk is situated on the Dnieper River south of Ukraine's capital Kiev.

The town was founded in 1776 by the Russian Prince, Potemkin by order of Catherine II, Empress of the Russian Empire and was called Ekaterinoslav. 1926 the city was renamed into Dnepropetrovsk.
A vital industrial center of Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk was one of the key centers of the nuclear, arms, and space industries of the former USSR. It is home to Yuzhmash, a major space and ballistic missile designer and manufacturer. Because of its military industry, the city was a closed city until the 1990s.
The city is very green along the wide and slow-moving Dnepr river and has beautiful embankments.
Long boulevards, parks and its green hills make Dnepropetrovsk very attractive for tourists from Ukraine and from abroad. Dnipropetrovsk has a developed public transportation system, including the Dnipropetrovsk Metro, which consists of one metro line with a total of 6 stations.

The best time for visiting the city is in late spring — second part of April and May, and early in autumn: September, October, when the city's trees turn yellow.
